INDIANAPOLIS — It was a historic night at the prelims of the 2017 IHSAA Boys Swimming Championships. A strong group of area swimmers punched tickets to Saturday’s consoles and finals, but the stories of the night were ones that quickly made the rounds throughout the state.

Zionsville’s Jack Franzman set a new state record in the 50 free with a blazing time of 19.85. The previous record was 20.08 set by Kyle DeCoursey, also of Zionsville, in 2015. Franzman’s time is the ninth fastest in high school history.

Carmel junior Drew Kibler crushed the 200 free record with a time of 1:33.30. The previous mark (1:37.02) was set by Peter Jameson (North Central) in 2006. Kibler’s time was even more astounding as it set a new national public high schools record, previously held by Maxime Rooney (1:33.70) of Granada High School in California. Kibler later set a new state record in the 100 free with a time of 43.25, breaking the record set by Olympian Blake Pieroni in 2014.

Warsaw pushed its medley relay through to Saturday by swimming a 1:37.63 to take the final spot in the consoles. The Tigers also swam a 1:31.89 to take 29th in the 200 free relay and a 3:18.90 to take 29th in the 400 free. Grant Knight represented Warsaw in the 100 breast and took 19th with a time of 58.71.

Tippecanoe Valley’s Chase Brower swam a 22.29, missing the cut in the 50 free.

Brady Robinson did not drop time, but will have the top seed in Saturday’s consoles for the 200 IM. Robinson swam a 1:53.03 to take the 9th-best time in the event.

Northridge finished 13th in the medley relay and earned to finals spots in the other relays. The Raiders had the sixth-best time in the 200 free (1:25.89) and qualified fourth (3:07.86) in the 400 free. Spencer Lehman had the tops times in both the 200 IM (1:48.58) and 500 free (4:27.69) while Connor Glenn made the finals in the 500 (4:34.84) and consoles in the 200. Camden Koch swam a 51.03 to earn the sixth-best time in the 100 back for the Raiders final individual qualifier of the day.

Concord’s Kallaghan Findley will swim in the consoles of the 100 breast. The Minutemen also pushed through their 200 free relay into the consoles and will have the first alternate in the 400 free.

Diving prelims start at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with championships for all event start at 1 p.m. at the Indiana University Natatorium.
