Triton Basketball: Welcome To The Penthouse
KNOX – Triton made it official Friday night. Championship season is here.
The Trojans capped an undefeated Hoosier North Athletic Conference season with a 50-37 win at Knox, its first outright conference championship since 2011 when Triton was a member of the Northern State Conference. Triton finished 8-0 in the conference, Winamac taking the lime with a 7-1 mark. The Warriors and Pioneer shared the inaugural title in 2016.
Triton made its statement early, holding Knox to just two points in the opening quarter and put the Redskins away with a 20-2 run. Triton led by 20 heading into the fourth quarter, allowing the party to start early heading back to Bourbon, where the Trojans will host the Class 1-A No. 51 sectional next week.
Zac Pitney led Triton (17-5) with 14 points, Nate Flenar had 12 points and six rebounds and Grant Johnson had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Triton has won nine straight and 13 of 14 since the start of January.
Knox (10-13) had Brandon Binkley lead the team with 13 points. The Redskins will play Winamac Wednesday in the Class 2-A No. 34 sectional at Winamac. Triton will host either North Miami or Culver Friday night.
In the JV game, Tye Orsund capped the Triton season with 16 points and eight rebounds in a 48-33 Trojan win. Delano Shumpert had 11 points and Ethan Berry added 10 points, six boards and four steals.
