WARSAW — A judge has ordered an evaluation to determine whether a Warsaw man who admitted to killing his girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter is competent to stand trial.

A hearing was held on March 20 on the defendant’s motion for an evaluation to determine Christopher Grimmett’s competency to stand trial.

Judge Michael Reed granted the motion and ordered that two psychiatrists or one psychiatrist and one psychologist examine Grimmett and report their findings to the court.

They are to report to the court whether Grimmett had the ability at the time of the events alleged in this case to appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct and whether Grimmett has the ability to understand the current proceedings and to assist his counsel in proceeding to trial.

The case stems from a missing child call that occurred on Thursday, Nov. 10. Grimmett admitted to officers that when he had been babysitting his girlfriend’s daughter, Adalin, he had beat her to death with his hands. Adalin’s body had been found buried in the backyard of Grimmett’s brother’s residence.

An autopsy was conducted and a preliminary determination of the cause of death was determined to be blunt force traumatic injuries.
