IHSAA Announces Classifications For 2018, 2019
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced the new classifications for IHSAA member schools in six team sports for the next two school years. Please note the classifications for baseball and softball will be released in coming days.
The enrollment figures, the total of boys and girls in grades 9‐12, were submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education last fall and are used to determine the classifications in the sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer, softball and volleyball.
Two schools that have joined the IHSAA membership in the last two years are not yet eligible to compete in IHSAA tournaments and are not included in the listing of schools. Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter‐East and Lighthouse Christian Academy of Bloomington will be eligible in 2020‐21.
Locally, there are a few changes to classifications for area schools, notably in soccer, where a third class was added for boys and girls teams.
The 3-A soccer class will pull Warsaw up with the big schools, while Wawasee, NorthWood will participate in 2-A. Tippecanoe Valley, which has just a boys soccer program, will compete in 2-A.
Three Rivers Conference members Northfield and Southwood will drop down to 1-A in volleyball, boys basketball and girls basketball while Rochester moves down to 2-A in volleyball and North Miami moves up to 2-A in girls and boys basketball.
In boys basketball, Columbia City moves up to 4-A, while in girls basketball 3-A champion South Bend St. Joseph’s moves to 4-A along with Heritage Christian, which was a thorn in the side of the 3-A regional that housed Tippecanoe Valley the past two seasons.
In football, Mishawaka drops down to 4-A while Indianapolis Roncalli, which defeated NorthWood this past season for the 4-A title, moves up to 5-A. Winamac and Churubusco both drop down to 1-A.
Also, per IHSAA By‐Law, C‐2‐3c, any school has the option to play up one or more classes in any sport they choose for the two‐year classification period by notifying the Association Office. In boys soccer and girls soccer, both Brebeuf Jesuit and Guerin Catholic have opted to play up in the new Class 3A in both sports.
Please note that Tournament Success Factor points will still be accumulated in baseball and softball this spring and any necessary updated versions in those sports will be released in the days following the end of those respective state tournaments.
Sectional groupings for each sport will be announced in early May following approval of the IHSAA Executive
Committee.
