Man Finally Arrested After Losing Police During One-Hour Chase In February
KOSCIUSKO — An Elkhart man was arrested last week after a police chase occurred in February. The chase lasted an hour and spanned two counties, ending with the police losing sight of the suspect.
Davon Dwight Williams, 27, 932 W. Lusher Avenue, Elkhart, is being charged with resisting law enforcement, level 6 felony; criminal mischief, class A misdemeanor; and driving while suspended, class A misdemeanor.
On Feb. 5, an officer with the Mentone Police Department attempted to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The officer activated his emergency lights and the black Chevrolet Blazer accelerated at a high rate of speed in a dangerous manner.
The officer continued to follow the vehicle and witnessed the driver lose control and drive into a cornfield. The driver regained control and continued traveling at speeds of 100 mph. The officer witnessed the vehicle fail to stop at multiple stop signs and traffic lights. The vehicle traveled through private yards and almost caused multiple accidents.
At one point, the officer attempted to block the vehicle from exiting a private yard. The Chevrolet Blazer then struck the patrol vehicle, causing approximately $1,500 in damage.
The vehicle was able to continue traveling at high rates of speed into Elkhart County. Officers with Elkhart County deployed stop sticks, but the vehicle traveled through private yards to avoid them.
Agencies from Kosciusko, Marshall and Elkhart counties assisted in the pursuit at high speeds. The chase endangered motorists and other vehicles at several intersections. The pursuit lasted for one hour and ended in Goshen with officers losing sight of the Chevrolet Blazer.
The Mentone Police Officer was able to obtain the registration plate number from the vehicle during the pursuit. The vehicle was registered as belonging to Williams. The officer was able to obtain the driver’s license photo of Williams and positively identified him as the driver.
Williams’ license is suspended prior and had an active arrest warrant for a probation violation in Elkhart County during the pursuit.
An additional arrest warrant was issued and Williams was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on April 13 with a $102,500 surety and cash bond.
