Tennis
The NorthWood girls tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision to Penn in non-conference play Monday night.
The duo of Reegan Miller and Hannah Walter picked up singles wins for the Panthers. Miller posted a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles and Walter prevailed 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles action.
NorthWood faces Bethany Christian Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in a semifinal match of the Goshen Sectional.
Baseball
Some late game heroics enabled the NorthWood baseball team to remain on its winning streak Monday night.
The Panthers plated the game’s lone run in their final at-bat to blank host Plymouth 1-0 in Northern Lakes Conference action.
Vincent Herschberger was the hero for NorthWood with an RBI double in the seventh inning for the game winner. Brant Mast, who had doubled earlier in the inning, scored the lone run as the Panthers won their 20th straight game and stayed unbeaten in league play.
NorthWood, which clinched at least a share of the NLC title with the win, was being no-hit by Cam Dennie until Mast’s double. Dennie fanned 10 in taking the tough luck loss for the Pilgrims.
Drake Gongwer fired a complete game shutout on the hill for NorthWood with five strikeouts. The NorthWood ace allowed just one hit in the gem.
The Panthers improve to 20-1 overall and stand 12-0 in the NLC.
NorthWood won the junior varsity game by a 10-2 count.
NorthWood hosts Goshen in conference play Wednesday night.
Softball
The NorthWood softball team picked up an 8-4 win over Plymouth in a league contest.
The host Panthers scored six runs in the second inning en route to the Northern Lakes Conference win.
The duo of Summer Stillson and Alexis Klotz each had two hits and scored two runs for the winners. Grace Anglemyer had a double and three RBI and Amanda Jenkins two RBI for the Panthers.
Hannah Stickley recorded the pitching win for NorthWood.
The Panthers play at Goshen in another NLC game Wednesday night.
