Winona Lake Limitless Park Seeks To Raise $87,000 For Additional Renovations
WINONA LAKE — The dream to complete the Winona Lake Limitless Park is getting closer to becoming a reality, however, an additional $87,000 needs to be raised before the next phase can be completed.
During a Winona Lake Town Council meeting held on Tuesday, May 16, Holly Hummitch, director of the Winona Lake Parks and Recreation Department and Senior Center, gave the council a progress update on the limitless park.
Over the last several years, extensive renovation has been done to the Winona Lake area park area, a new splash pad and playground area have been made accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. Hummitch explained the work done is just the beginning of the multi-phase project to refurbish the entire Winona Lake Park area.
The next phases of the plan are new restroom facilities near the splash pad, expanding the playground area and refurbishing the “Victory Circle” fire ring, all in keeping with the limitless concept allowing park goers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the park’s features.
While a total of $75,000 has been donated towards construction of a four-unit restroom facility with showers, an additional $87,000 needs to be raised so construction can begin prior to the end of the summer.
Additional phases of construction will take place as funds become available through grants, community and corporate donations and other fundraising.
The council unanimously approved an ordinance requiring biodegradable waste bags for yard waste. The ordinance will go into effect on July 1. The ordinance will require residents of Winona Lake to use biodegradable bags for yard waste the street department picks up. This ordinance does not pertain to regular trash pickup. The town will provide the first 15 biodegradable bags for each residence.
During the meeting, council member Bruce Shaffner commented on Silveus Insurance Group’s recent purchase of land located between ninth and twelfth street in Winona Lake.
Shaffner said, “We’re very excited about having them here.”
