Wawasee Sports Wrap: May 17
Softball
For the first time in program history, Wawasee ran through the Northern Lakes Conference undefeated, culminating a 5-2 win Wednesday over Concord.
Wawasee ran through the conference 14-0, giving the senior class three NLC titles in four years. Senior Madie Wilson had two hits and three RBIs on a pair of singles to lead the Lady Warriors, and classmate Riley Kunkle added an RBI single. Ale Brito scored a pair of runs.
Amber Lemberg was solid in the circle, shaking off a two-run first inning to settle in for the complete game, giving up six hits, one walk and one strikeout, but moved to 7-0 on the year.
“A lot of the credit goes to these kids, I’m just the new general to lead this troop,” stated Wawasee head coach Mike Barger. “They have bought into my philosophy, they are a talented group, with more talent coming. The kids deserve all the credit on three-peating as conference champs and running the table is just a remarkable accomplishment. It’s something that will stick with them for a long time and with that there is still unfinished business.”
Wawasee’s JV also capped a perfect NLC season with a 9-7 win over the Minutemen. Grace Allen had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored, and Ciandra Ervin had two hits, a run and RBI. The junior circuit moves to 14-3 overall and caps the NLC season 11-0.
Wawasee (21-3, 14-0 NLC) will host Bremen Friday afternoon before taking aim at the Lakeland Sectional, where it will meet the host Lakers in Monday’s tourney opener.
Baseball
Wawasee concluded its conference slate on a high note with a 7-6 win in nine innings over Concord.
Gavin Barker had looked to have given Wawasee the win with a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give Wawasee a 6-5 lead. Concord, however, scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
Wawasee left the bases loaded in the eighth, but broke through in the ninth on a bases loaded single by Blaine Greer.
Rylan Kuhn was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Spencer Prescott added two hits and a stolen base.
Wawasee finished its NLC run in the JV ranks with a 11-0 win over Concord. The Warriors were 6-8 in the conference and level up at 10-10. The JV will host its home tourney Saturday, opening against Wabash.
Wawasee wraps up NLC play 6-8 and is 11-14 overall with its final regular season contest Saturday against Lakeland.
