Warsaw Sports Wrap: May 22
Golf
The Warsaw junior varsity golf team placed fifth in the Bob Turner Classic Monday evening.
The hosts shot 352 in the six-team tournament, which included five varsity teams, held at the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club in Leesburg.
The Warsaw varsity squad, along with teams from NorthWood and Wawasee, could not compete as scheduled in the event. The trio were taking part in the NLC Tournament in Plymouth Monday night, which was postponed on Saturday due to rain.
Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger won the tournament with a team score of 308. Penn was second at 309, followed by Fort Wayne Canterbury (314), Triton (322), Warsaw (352) and Tippecanoe Valley (376).
Chase Byron led the Warsaw JV contingent with a round of 85.
Zach LaLonde shot an 86 and Jacob LaLonde an 87 for the Tigers. Rob Sullivan had a 95 and Lucas Rhoades a 104.
Spencer Johnson shot a 78 to pace Triton. Isaac Walls had an 82 and Beau Hepler and Braden Kreft each had an 87 for the Trojans. Bryce Swihart shot an 87.
Jeremy Julian fired a round of 86 to lead Valley. Cade Brouyette had a 93, while John Young shot 96, Chris Schipper 101 and Noah Hoffman 102 for the Vikings.
Triton will host Valley and Bremen on Thursday at Rozella Ford. The Warsaw varsity, along with Triton, will play in the Lafayette Jeff Classic on Saturday. Valley will compete in the LaVille Invite on Saturday.
Baseball
The Warsaw baseball team edged past Elkhart Central 9-8 in the regular-season finale.
The host Tigers trailed 4-2 after four innings before scoring four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take the lead. Warsaw then held on for the win as Central plated three runs in their final at bat in the seventh frame.
Alex Miller led the offense for the winners with three hits.
The duo of Bryce Sensibaugh and Jared Hawley each also had multiple hits for the Tigers.
Matt Shapiro notched the pitching win for Warsaw. The Tigers used six pitchers in the contest, while Central used four different hurlers.
Jake Shriner led Central with three hits and three RBI.
The Tigers, who are 8-19, will face Elkhart Central again on Thursday night in the Elkhart Memorial Sectional. The Blue Blazers are 15-11.
The Warsaw junior varsity team wrapped up a fine season by topping Central 5-3.
Joe Wilkinson led the JV team with two hits and two RBI. Jacob Hutcherson got the pitching win and Noah Burgh collected the save.
The Warsaw JV team finishes its season at 19-7.
