Swiss Perfection went before the Syracuse Town Council Monday night to seek rezoning approval for a new business.

Company representatives asked that a building, located at South Huntington Street just south of the railroad tracks, be rezoned from light industrial to commercial. Council members saw no issues and approved the rezoning which allows for a bait shop to be opened there.

Councilman Larry Siegel added he is really proud of the redevelopment effort the new owner has been doing to the error. More details will be revealed at the next meeting.

Ken Jones, a representative of Wightman Petrie, updated the council on the industrial complex project saying things are getting completed and they are making sure everything follows the rules. Jones intends to hold pre-bidding at one of the council’s regular meetings, possibly the June meeting. He stated it was feasible to break ground this year.

Jones also stressed now was the time to start marketing the industrial complex and Syracuse.

In a related moved, council members signed a warranty deed for INDOT that would limit access from the industrial park to SR 13 and U.S. 6. They also approved an additional appropriation out of the River Boat Fund to help pay for the Vega Field appraisal process.

In other business, Syracuse Police Chief Tony Ciriello reported that his department had seen 289 calls during April. Ciriello also introduced the department’s new officer, Joe Leach. Leach is a Wawasee High School graduate who has already graduated from the police academy. Leach will be taking over for officer Tom Weikel, who is joining the Kosciusko County Sheriff Department. Leach was sworn in by town attorney Michael Reed during the meeting.

Next Syracuse Town Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 19.
