Memorial Tennis Trio Wrap Up Stellar Postseason Run
INDIANAPOLIS – A historic postseason push for a trio of players from the Elkhart Memorial girls’ tennis team ended Friday afternoon.
The trio of Krystal Grubb, Maggie Dickerson and Layla Jojo wrapped up outstanding seasons in the individual portion of the State Finals.
No. 1 singles player Grubb and the No. 1 doubles combination of Dickerson and Jojo each lost in the quarterfinal round at Park Tudor High School.
The three, all of whom claimed titles at the LaPorte Regional last Saturday, made history for the Crimson Chargers. It was the first time in program history that both the top singles player and top doubles team from Memorial advanced to State in the same year.
Grubb closed out her senior season with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Evansville Memorial senior Makenzie Myers. Myers, who is now 21-3, advances to the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m. to face Castle junior Madison Devillez.
Myers, who will play collegiately at Miami of Ohio, is in the State Finals for the third straight year. She advances to the semifinals for the second year in a row.
Grubb concluded her prep career at 88-10, the leader in career wins at Memorial. The IUPUI recruit surpassed older sister Katie, a 2009 EMHS graduate, who was 86-9. The younger Grubb lost in the quarterfinals at State a year ago and was the top player as a freshman on a Memorial team that advanced to the State Finals.
Grubb was a three-time Northern Lakes Conference champion at No. 1 singles.
The other semifinal Saturday will pit Carmel junior Lauren Lemonds (31-0) versus Fort Wayne Canterbury sophomore Kyra Foster (28-1). Lemonds beat Mooresville junior Morgan Fitzpatrick 6-2, 6-0 and Foster topped Avon junior Teodora Simion 6-2, 6-0 Friday.
The state championship match for No. 1 singles players who are undefeated in the state tournament series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
Senior Dickerson and junior Jojo lost 6-2, 6-2 to the Carroll team of sophomores Mia Toscos and Lauren VanWyngarden in their quarterfinal match.
Dickerson and Jojo, who won a pair of three-set matches (in which they lost both of the first sets) to win their regional title. The pair finished the season 13-5.
The team of Toscos and VanWyngarden, who are now 28-2, will play the South Bend St. Joseph duo of senior Talle Corrigan and freshman Kayla Graham in a semifinal Saturday at 10 a.m. Corrigan and Graham (18-0) topped the Yorktown team of senior Maddia Minniear and freshman Samantha Academia 6-3, 6-2 Friday.
The other semifinal Saturday pits the Carmel team of juniors Julia Miller and Grace Marchese versus the Center Grove team of juniors Isabella Schoolcraft and Cassidy Hardin. The Carmel duo improved to 9-0 by beating seniors Danielle Summitt and Lauren Winchell of Christian Academy of Indiana 6-0, 6-3. The Center Grove tandem, now 21-0, topped juniors Susan Biederstedt and Autumn Clark of North Central 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.
The doubles state title match is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday.
