Turnovers Key In Triton Loss
PLYMOUTH – Turnovers proved costly to Triton in a boys basketball loss at Plymouth Tuesday night.
The Class 1-A No. 4 Trojans had too many miscues in dropping a 63-43 final to the Class 3-A No. 11 Pilgrims in non-conference play.
Plymouth took advantage of nine Triton turnovers in the first quarter en route to a 20-8 lead. The Pilgrims, now 2-0 on the season, led 38-17 at halftime.
Triton, which drops to 1-1 with the loss, had a total of 20 turnovers in the loss.
Senior Joe Knapp led Plymouth with 21 points. Standout Mack Mercer, a 6-8 senior, had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Pilgrims.
Plymouth, which opened the season by beating Bremen 83-48, defeated Triton 60-43 last season. The Pilgrims were 16-6 a year ago under coach Ryan Bales.
Triton star Clay Yeo led the way for the Trojans Tuesday night. The Valparaiso University recruit scored 15 points for coach Jason Groves’ squad.
The Trojans, who had opened the season with a 61-33 win at Oregon-Davis, also got 10 points from Tanner Shepherd. Darren Harrell scored eight and Skyler Reichert had six for Triton.
Plymouth won the junior varsity contest 35-32 in overtime.
Triton (1-1) plays at NorthWood and Plymouth (2-0) travels to Rochester Friday night.
