Naked And Afraid Contestant Comes To Warsaw To Teach Survival Skills
WARSAW — Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid contestant and wilderness survival teacher Clint Jivoin came to Warsaw June 22, to help teach a group of 10 a few survival skills.
This was Jivoin’s second year coming to Warsaw, thanks to the Warsaw Community Public Library, to teach a wilderness survival class. The two-hour class took place at Lucerne Park.
While last year’s lessons focused on starting fire and purifying water, this year Jivoin focused on how to build a secure shelter. Jivoin started the class by teaching an array of knots and hitches, before tying all the lessons together with a shelter made of two tripods.
Jivoin himself once lived in a shelter made of 20-foot tripods, attesting to how usable the shelter building technique is. “I needed a pulley system to raise them up,” Jivoin recalled.
Once the group had a shelter made, Jivoin took them to the nearby wooded area to look for some edible plants, including mulberries and wild raspberries. Before diving in, Jivoin warned of the potential dangers by pointing out the large amount of poison ivy growing in the area. “Always look what’s growing around the plants you’re looking at.”
A native of southeastern Indiana, Jivoin grew up with a love of camping and the outdoors. He’s been a survival instructor for over five years, appearing on the television show Naked and Afraid in 2013.
