IHSAA Announces Baseball, Softball Classifications For Next Two Years
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana High School Athletic Association announces the new classifications for IHSAA member schools in baseball and softball for the next two school years.
Sectional groupings for both sports will be announced in late August following approval of the IHSAA Executive
Committee.
The enrollment figures, the total of boys and girls in grades 9‐12, were submitted by the schools to the Indiana
Department of Education last fall and are used to determine the classifications in the sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer, softball and volleyball. Classifications for the other sports were announced last March.
Two schools that have joined the IHSAA membership in the last two years are not yet eligible to compete in IHSAA tournaments and are not included in the listing of schools. Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter‐East and Lighthouse Christian Academy of Bloomington will be eligible in 2020‐21.
Locally, only a handful of teams were affected. In softball, Three Rivers Conference members North Miami, Northfield and Southwood along with Northeast Corner Conference member Fremont all dropped from Class 2-A to Class 1-A. Relating to teams of local interest, Kankakee Valley, after two straight appearances in the state finals in Class 3-A, moves to Class 4-A. Valley played in the Twin Lakes Semi-state in the same bracket as Wawasee. Northwestern, which also fed into a potential spot in the Twin Lakes Semi-state, has dropped to Class 2-A.
Of note, Fairfield is two students heavy of dropping to Class 2-A and Columbia City is the eighth-largest Class 3-A program, but over five-dozen students short of the cutline.
In baseball, very little in the area has changed except Hoosier North Athletic Conference member LaVille moves up to Class 2-A and Southwood bumps down to Class 1-A.
Columbia City sits fourth in Class 3-A, but is over 50 students shy of the cutline for advancement.
Also, per IHSAA By‐Law, C‐2‐3c, any school has the option to play up one or more classes in any sport they choose for the two‐year classification period by notifying the Association Office.
Accumulated Tournament Success Factor points have been tallied from the previous two seasons and have
been applied in placing those affected schools in their appropriate classification within each sport.
