Women Charged With Theft After Falsely Scanning Items
WARSAW — A Warsaw woman is facing charges after falsely scanning items at a Walmart self-checkout.
Jaclyne Jean Waikel, 32, 340 E. Levi Lee Road, Warsaw, is being charged with two counts of theft with sentence enhancements, each a level 6 felony.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, an officer with the Warsaw Police Department responded to a theft at Walmart on June 24.
When the officer spoke to loss prevention, they were advised that on June 22 a male and female, later identified as Waikel, were exiting the store when the greeter asked to check their receipt. The greeter found a Pioneer amplifier in the cart that was not listed. The male said he had paid for the amplifier separately and had left the receipt at the self-checkout.
As described by the officer in the police report, the man went back to get the receipt and Waikel left the store with the cart. Waikel then came back and attempted to pay for the amplifier but the debit card used was declined.
Loss prevention advised officers that the surveillance footage shows the male and Waikel go to the car stereo aisle, select two amplifiers and place them in a cart. Later, while in the grocery department, the male removes the security spider wire.
While at the self-checkout, the duo did not scan two amplifiers along with a baseball bat and glove combo, but would scan a spatula before bagging the items. The greeter removed one amplifier but the other items, valued at $267.78, were stolen.
On July 11 another officer was called to Walmart for a theft report. Loss prevention had discovered while reviewing surveillance that Waikel later returned to the store on June 22 to return unidentified items without a receipt. While in the store, Waikel selected multiple clothing items, lightbulbs and a filter. While checking out, Waikel would scan one item but bag several. The stolen items were valued at $76.79.
On July 12 Walmart loss prevention identified Waikel to officers, as Waikel had used her license to identify herself when returning the items without a receipt.
According to the affidavit, officers spoke with Waikel and she admitted to falsely scanning the items by scanning a spatula in the first occurrence, as well as scanning one item of clothing but bagging multiple in the second occurrence.
Waikel was booked in to the Kosciusko County Jail on Aug. 25 with a $5,720 surety and cash bond.
