Wawasee Sports Wrap: Sept. 9
Cross Country
Wawasee competed in the Wildcat Classic hosted by Indiana Wesleyan. The boys were seventh overall and the girls were eighth.
Spencer Hare paced the Warriors with a time of 16:21, landing in 15th place overall in the race. Luke Griner was just behind Hare, clocking 16:28 for 18th overall.
Wawasee’s next three were Michael Hammer (58, 17:11), Braxton Alexander (60, 17:14) and Jace Alexander (77, 17:34).
The Wawasee girls had Kenzie Smith lead the team with a time of 20:23, taking 26th overall. Following in were Caitlin Wortinger (58, 21:37), Valerie Pizana (72, 22:25), Aubrey Kuhn (75, 22:28) and Reagan Atwood (87, 22:44).
Valparaiso dominated the boys meet, scoring 39 points to runner-up Zionsville’s 139 points. Michael Rans of Caston won the meet with a blistering time of 15:30.
Hamilton Southeastern edged Valpo, 36-39, for the girls title, with Warsaw taking third at 130. Norwell’s Sydney Lambert won the girls race with a time of 18:26. Warsaw’s Mia Beckham was the top Tiger with a time of 19:53, placing 17th overall.
Wawasee will visit Elkhart Memorial on Tuesday.
Football
Concord hosted Wawasee in JV action on Saturday and beat the Warriors 21-7.
Levi Brown had the lone score for the Warriors, a two-yard touchdown run.
Jesse Landeros had a pair of catches for 30 yards to pace the offense, and on defense, Evan Gregory had two sacks and Dane Jenkins recovered a fumble.
Wawasee sits at 2-2 and will host NorthWood next Saturday.
Volleyball
Wawasee took part in the Warsaw Freshman Invite, and split its four games. The Lady Warriors picked up wins against NorthWood and Central Noble, but lost its first two games of the season against St. Joseph’s and Huntington North.
Leading Wawasee (11-2) were Emma Dippon with 13 kills and eight blocks, Morgan Heche with 26 digs and seven aces, Catherine Ondrla with 19 assists and six aces, and Delaney Hare with 10 digs and six kills.
