Racist Note Left On Student’s Door Inside Grace Residence Hall
WINONA LAKE — One Grace College student woke up to a racist note on his residence hall door this morning, Oct. 9.
The note, written on a student of color’s residence hall door is currently being investigated by the Winona Lake Police Department and the Grace College Campus Safety Office.
The mother of the victim is speaking out about the incident. “The police were notified and he said they don’t even act concerned with the complaints that there’s been. [He] is giving up at this school. He said he’s so fed up that he’s quitting sports and he’s just gonna stay when he comes home for fall break because this racist stuff keeps happening.”
According to Andrew Flamm, vice president of advancement at Grace College, administration has been in contact with the victim and his family and “tried to reassure them on their safety.” Flamm emphasized that racism is not tolerated on campus and that the college is investigating to get to the bottom of the incident.
Grace College President Bill Katip released a written statement on the incident. “As we investigate, let me be absolutely clear: racism will not be tolerated at Grace College. We are first and foremost a community of believers in Christ. We are one body called to edify and love one another. There is no place for hate on our campus. If you believe there is, then you do not belong on our campus.”
The residence halls are only accessible with a security swipe by other students who live in the same residence hall. The public and students who live outside the residence hall would not have access inside the building.
Grace College has notified all students about the incident via an internal email. The email included ways to report information about the crime and resources available to students for counseling services. Faculty members were encouraged to speak about the incident with their classes today. Officials at Grace College are looking into ways to bring campus together and against racism.
