Grace Basketball: Strong Second Half Key In Victory
LIVONIA, Mich. – A 61-point second half propelled the Grace College men’s basketball team to a 92-82 win at Madonna on Saturday.
The Lancers (4-2) shot a blistering 76 percent from the field after halftime, drilling seven 3-pointers en route to the victory.
Logan Godfrey was the most efficient player on the court Saturday, hitting 9-of-11 from the floor for 21 points, adding 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Erik Bowen racked up a double-double of 16 points and 13 boards, adding a team-high six assists.
Grace found itself in an early hold at the Crusaders (4-2); Madonna jumped ahead by 10 in the early minutes.
The Lancers eventually grabbed their first lead midway through the half at 19-18 on a 3-pointer from Jaret Sons, and Grace went into halftime ahead 31-29.
Grace nearly doubled its offensive output after halftime. Godfrey revved up the Lancers’ offensive engine with nine points in the first 3:05 of the half, and back-to-back triples from Haden Deaton and Martin Schiele put Grace up 53-43.
The Lancers maintained a double-digit lead for nearly the rest of regulation, climbing ahead by as much as 16 with 4:28 left in the game.
Madonna made the game interesting at the end, using a flurry of 3s to chop Grace’s cushion down to five with 53 seconds on the clock.
But Stephen Halstead went 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds to ice the victory.
Halstead hit 3-of-5 from beyond the arc for 15 points, and Deaton finished with 14 points and four assists.
Schiele racked up 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 15 minutes off the bench, and Matt Jennings and Sons each scored five.
The Lancers return to action next weekend with the annual Terry Polston Hoops for Hope on Nov. 17-18. Grace is partnering with the women’s team for a two-day, eight-game weekend of basketball at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center. Proceeds from the weekend will benefit the cancer care fund in Kosciusko County.
