Fire Chief Warns Of Recall, Dangers Of CO
SYRACUSE — Turkey Creek Fire Territory Chief Mickey Scott while giving his report to the Syracuse Town Council Tuesday, Nov. 21, took a moment to spread public safety information.
“Kidde has recalled 37 million fire extinguishers manufactured from Jan. 1, 1973, to Aug. 15, 2017,” Scott said.
Affected fire extinguishers are ones with plastic handles. These fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. Scott noted one death has been attributed to these recalled extinguishers. He added the nozzle can also detach with enough force to cause injury.
These fire extinguishers are sold under a variety of names, including Gillette, Sears, Sanford, Honeywell, Fireaway and more — however, they are all manufactured by Kidde.
More information can be found at www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/kidde-recalls-fire-extinguishers-with-plastic-handles-due-to-failure-to-discharge-and. Additionally, visit Kidde’s website, www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/, to learn more or get a replacement fire extinguisher for free.
Additionally, Scott said, “(Carbon monoxide detectors) are tremendously important. This is the time of year is when we see issues with (CO); we’ve already seen one,” Scott said, noting people need to check their CO detectors and replace any batteries. “It’s a big, big thing; it’s even more important than your smoke alarm — at least you can see smoke but you can’t see (CO).”
