Warsaw Basketball: Defense Lifts Ladies Past Eagles
COLUMBIA CITY – The Warsaw girls basketball team finished what it started Tuesday night.
Thanks to defense.
The Tigers allowed just one second half field goal in rallying past host Columbia City 32-22 in a non-conference contest.
Warsaw, which had not played since a loss to Carroll last Wednesday, outscored the Eagles 10-1 in the final quarter to notch the win. The Tigers trailed 19-18 at halftime before outscoring the hosts 14-3 over the final 16 minutes.
Warsaw, which improves to 7-3, led 11-7 after the opening quarter as Emma Bohnenkamper scored five points. The Eagles led 19-18 at halftime before the Tigers took a 22-21 advantage into the final frame.
Kacy Bragg continued her strong all-around play to pace Warsaw. The junior led her team with 12 points to go with nine rebounds.
Maddie Ryman had a fine effort for the winners with 10 points, including a pair of big 3-pointers.
Bohnenkamper finished with five points and Brielle Harrison and five points for Warsaw.
Warsaw, which has beaten Columbia City in 14 of their last 16 meetings, shot 11-31 from the field in the game. The Tigers were 3-7 from distance and went 7-13 from the free throw line.
The host Eagles, who lost their fifth straight game, finished 9-38 from the field. City was just 1-19 from the field in the second half.
Gabby Fry scored seven points to pace the Eagles, who drop to 2-9 on the season.
Columbia City won the junior varsity game by a 29-22 final. Kensie Ryman scored seven points and Kendall Wayne had five to lead the Warsaw JV squad.
Warsaw returns to action at Wawasee Saturday night for its Northern Lakes Conference opener. Columbia City hosts East Noble on Saturday afternoon.
