Enjoy The Syracuse Winter Carnival While Giving Back To Local Organizations
SYRACUSE — Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean there isn’t any fun to be had. The Syracuse Winter Carnival will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, regardless of weather conditions, with a few events kicking off at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26. Activities will be hosted at a variety of places this year from the Syracuse Community Center and Lakeside Park to the Syracuse Public Library, Wawasee Plaza, Main Street and Oakwood Resort beach.
The snowmobile races and Main Street events, however, are being postponed until Saturday, Feb. 10.
Friday
The ninth annual Wawasee Kiwanis Soup Supper will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the community center, Friday, Jan. 26, at $6 per person to taste around 25 different soups. Proceeds will benefit several local youth related charities. To enter a soup, registration forms can be picked up at the community center or downloaded at www.wawaseekiwanis.org.
The Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum will be open during the soup supper and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 27, to show a special display just for the carnival. All are welcome to stop in and visit while warming up.
Saturday
The third annual Winter Warm Up 5K will start from the former Syracuse Elementary School, 400 W Brooklyn St., at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27. Registration can be done at www.syracusewawaseetrails.com for $15, or pay $20 to register at 6:30 a.m. on the day of 5K. There will be three age groups. Prizes will be awarded for each age division winner and a grand prize for the over-all winner. There will be hot cocoa at the finish line.
The 2018 Fire and Ice Polar Plunge, benefiting the Turkey Creek Fire Territory, check in is at 11:30 a.m. at Oakwood Resort Beach. Daring souls will take the plunge at noon. Individuals can participate for $15 or a team of six participants can partake for $50. Prizes will be given for the best teams costume and best individual costume. Charlie Rocket will provide live entertainment at The Pier & Back Porch from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The will be a chili bar, grilled cheese sandwiches and drink specials.
Syracuse Public Library’s Friends of the Library will be serving soup and cornbread from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. while holding a book sale in the multipurpose room, for anyone needing a place to warm up their cold hands and fill their stomachs. A book sale will also take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 10.
Events Moved To Feb. 10
Snowmobile races will take place Feb. 10, at Lakeside Park and community center, 1013 N. Long Drive, Syracuse. Registration for the snowmobile drags will be from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The Radar Run will start at 10 a.m. and the Kitty Kat Races will start at 10:30 a.m. with lunch available on site at the community center. It will be $15 per class with an award for the winner in each class. Proceeds from the races will go to Wawasee Kiwanis Community projects, the Harold Schrock Athletic Complex and the Riley Hospital for Children.
Main Street will host interesting ice carving demonstrations at noon and dog sled demonstrations at 2 p.m. Available at Wawasee Plaza from noon to 3 p.m. are face painting, a hot cocoa bar, a Girl Scout cookie sale and a Cub Scout chili sale.
