Lancers Share The Wealth In Win
WINONA LAKE – Eleven players scored as No. 9 Grace played one of their most complete games of the season with 82-64 men’s basketball win against Goshen on Saturday in Crossroads League play.
The Lancers (12-4; 4-1 Crossroads League) shot a sizzling 57 percent from the field and placed four players in double-digit scoring.
The Maple Leafs (7-9; 0-5 CL), on the other hand, were held to 39 percent shooting on the day, including 4-of-17 from beyond the arc (24 percent).
Grace led from the get-go as Greg Miller scored the first points of the game 18 seconds after the tip-off.
Goshen was within striking distance behind 24-15 midway through the first half, but the Lancers exploded with a 25-6 run. When the dust had settled, Grace had earned its largest lead of the game at 49-21.
An unfortunate incident marred the end of the first half as a scuffle between the teams with 2.2 seconds remaining resulted in four players being ejected – one player from Grace and three from Goshen.
Grace maintained its 20-point cushion nearly the entire second half as the Lancers cruised down the stretch.
Overall, 13 players saw the court for the Lancers with all but two of those players making a field goal.
Grace held a plus-13 advantage in rebounding and nabbed 10 steals from the Maple Leafs.
Miller made 7-of-11 from the floor for a team-high 16 points. Freshman Brandon Vanderhegghen recorded the best game of his young career with 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to go along with five boards.
Elliot Smith finished with 11 points and four assists, Bruce Grimm Jr. added seven points and six assists, and Karl Columbus tallied 4 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
Niko Read scored seven points in 15 minutes off the bench, and Kyle Fillman chipped in with six points and six boards.
With the win, the Lancers move into a three-way tie for second place in the Crossroads League. Grace will have a crucial week in the league standings, starting on Tuesday in a road game at Taylor University (4-1 CL).
The Lancers will then host rival Bethel College (5-0 CL) on Thursday at 7 p.m. before traveling to St. Francis (3-2 CL) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
