UPDATE — Warsaw Driver Dies After Smart Car Accident On US 30
KOSCIUSKO — A Warsaw man sustained fatal injuries after a two vehicle collision that occurred Friday afternoon on US 30.
Officers with the Warsaw Police Department responded to the accident. The crash was between a 2004 Chrysler Sebring and a red smart car.
Upon their arrival, Robert D. Walters, 84, Warsaw, the driver of the red smart car, was unconscious. Walters was later pronounced dead at Kosciusko Community Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.
Taylor R. Zebell, 19, South Bend, driver of the Chrysler Sebring, stated she was traveling west on Lake City Highway, approaching the intersection of Silveus Crossing. Zebell had a green traffic light to proceed.
As Zebell approached the intersection, Walters’ vehicle turned left in front of her. Zebell attempted to slow her vehicle but was unable to avoid a collision, causing her vehicle to strike the passenger’s side of Walters’ vehicle.
Zebell complained of right leg pain but refused medical treatment on scene.
Robin L. Hoffer, Warsaw, witnessed the accident. Hoffer stated that she was behind Walters’ vehicle, preparing to make a left hand turn onto Silveus Crossing. There was a red left turn arrow for both vehicles.
Hoffer stated Walters’ vehicle was stopped for a brief period of time and then proceeded to turn left onto Silveus Crossing while the traffic light was still red.
The Warsaw Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Department, Indiana State Police and Lutheran EMS.
