Grace Sports Wrap: April 24
Softball
Grace’s softball team took 1-of-2 from Huntington on Tuesday in Crossroads League play.
The Lady Lancers (13-31, 7-23 CL) dropped the opener 7-2 before bouncing back in a 9-5 victory to end the doubleheader at Huntington.
Chandler Elliott had the hot bat in Grace’s win, going 4-of-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Hannah Herbster had a pair of hits in both games.
The Foresters (21-19, 16-14 CL) jumped out to an early lead in the first game and never looked back. Huntington scored four runs in the first inning and another tally in the second to go ahead 5-0.
Hannah Herbster managed to score Grace’s first run in the fourth inning, and Ashley Kleinbub’s RBI double plated Britney Young in the seventh inning. But the Lady Lancers were limited to those two runs.
Herbster was 2-for-3 with a run and a double, and Young hit 2-of-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, Grace got the early jump. The Lady Lancers pulled ahead 6-1 after three innings.
Herbster hit a run-scoring triple in the top of the first, and Elliott drove in Herbster on the next at-bat.
Kleinbub walked to start the second inning, stole second and was bunted over to third. Abby Mozingo’s ground ball then scored Kleinbub.
Elliott hit a two-run double in the top of the third, and Michaela Lee also scored to make Grace’s sixth run.
The Foresters used a three-run fourth to chop Grace’s cushion down to 6-4. But Elliott and Young scored in the fifth inning to reassert a comfortable lead.
Hannah Middlebrooks picked up the complete game victory from the mound, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in seven innings.
Elliott’s 4 hits, 3 RBIs and 2 doubles led Grace, and Herbster was 2-for-4 with two runs. Kleinbub stole two bases and scored twice, Olivia Scarbrough drove in two runs, and Heim had two runs and two steals.
The Lady Lancers are home for a four-game homestand this weekend. Grace hosts Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Friday at 3 p.m. and Goshen on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Men’s Golf
The 2017-18 season for Grace’s men’s golf team reached its conclusion on Tuesday at the Crossroads League Championship.
Grace finished eighth in the three-round tournament, held at Purgatory Golf Course.
Monday saw the teams play 36 holes. Chad Spencer had the lowest round of the day for Grace, carding a second-round 74. His 78-74 scorecard after the first day was good for 15th overall.
Spencer shot an 82 in the final round on Tuesday, finishing the tournament with a team-leading 234.
Camden Gongwer was consistent throughout the tournament, finishing with a 239. He finished on Monday with a 79-78 followed by a third-round 82.
Tim Rata was the only Lancer to lower his score on Tuesday. He birded two holes in every round, finishing with a 79-84-77 to end his freshman campaign.
Cameron Bates produced a tournament total of 245, highlighted by a first-round 78, and Tristan Nienhuis had to withdraw after shooting 76-80 on the opening day.
