Girls tennis
Triton’s girls tennis team earned a big Hoosier North Athletic Conference win over visiting Knox in the two teams’ first meeting in Bourbon Tuesday, 3-2.
Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross shut out Madison Land and Maddie Krueger, 6-0, 6-0 at 1 doubles, Megan McFarland and Emma Hepler did the same to Carissa Kwpa and Hailey Thompson at 2 doubles, and Kolbie Mason downed Shelby Faverty 6-3, 6-0 at 1 singles as the Lady Trojans moved to 5-0 in the HNAC and 8-1 overall.
Knox got wins at 2 and 3 singles, as Maria Hasnerl beat Molly McFarland 3 and 3 on the number two court, and Cameron McGowan downed Amanda Baker, 6-1, 6-2, at 3 singles. The Lady Redskins slid to 4-5 overall with a 1-1 HNAC mark.
Triton’s JV swept Knox, meanwhile, 6-0.
Baseball
Caston plated five runs in the seventh to make it interesting, but host Triton held on for a 6-5 Hoosier North Athletic Conference win at home Tuesday night.
Lucas Newman went 2 for 3 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs, and Delano Shumpert recorded two more RBIs for the Trojans, who followed up a one-run second with a five-run third to break it open.
Dylan Hensley got the win, striking out 15 while giving up five hits with one walk in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Ryan Kaufman surrendered five runs coming in to relieve Hensley in the sixth, and Delano Shumpert pitched the game’s final out replacing Tye Ferry during the dramatic sixth.
The Trojans (4-8, 3-5 HNAC) will play a doubleheader at Winamac starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Softball
Triton’s softball team took one on the chin, 16-0, at area-rival Bremen Tuesday.
Rylee Hershberger homered as part of a three-RBI night for Bremen, and Caitlyn Traxler got the win in the circle, giving up just two hits and no walks through four innings pitched. She also doubled twice to drive in three runs and help her own cause.
Triton finished with just three hits in the five-inning loss. Stats were not given for the Trojans.
Triton will play at Winamac Friday at 5 p.m.
