Wawasee picked up its biggest golf win of the season, shooting a 168 to defeat chief rival Warsaw by one stroke, along with a 16-stroke win over Goshen Thursday night in the final Northern Lakes Conference trio before the conference meet.

Wawasee, with the luxury of getting Warsaw on its home course at South Shore, used a 39 from Dillon Drake and a couple of ‘one-betters’. While Warsaw’s Luke Delp was the medalist at 38, Wawasee’s Zach Leedy posted a 41 to outdo Sam Yeager by one, Jared Krugman shot a 43 in matching Chase Byron, and Victor Tayagua’s 45 was one better than Tommy Meier’s 46, the scoring that clinched the match.

Goshen was led by the 39 from Peyton Cripe, two 48s from Ethan Vallejo and Joseph Narayan and a 49 from Jake Jennette.

“It was great to get a couple of conference wins,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “Dillon and Zach were their usual steady selves. Jared has been working on his swing and it finally paid off. Victor played really well parring three of his last four holes. Really happy for our guys.”

Warsaw, which shot a 146 in its trio Tuesday at Stonehenge, still finishes the NLC 6-1 overall and will have the upper hand heading into Saturday’s NLC Championships at Rozella. Wawasee wraps up NLC play 4-3 overall.

Softball

South Bend Adams protected its turf in a big way Thursday, dropping a nine-spot in the first inning of a 9-2 win over Wawasee.

The game, which was a fill-in game for Adams, was one Wawasee would like to forget after Adams sent 14 to the plate and rapped six hits in the frame. Delaney Shields tripled to start the inning, but otherwise Adams scored on three wild pitches, a pair of RBI singles by Destiny Jennings and Lexie Davis, a sacrifice fly and three runs came in on errors.

Briana Pringle did the work in the circle for the Eagles, holding Wawasee to seven hits and no earned runs over six innings. Olivia Stuck was tagged with the loss for the Warriors, allowing all of the damage in the first.

Wawasee (8-15), losers of three straight, will tackle its biggest test of the season when it visits Class 2-A No. 1 Bremen in the regular season finale Friday afternoon.
