GOSHEN —You’ve seen the videos on Facebook. A soldier who is serving his/her country surprises family members at a sporting event or a special event. Those attending the Daughtry concert Saturday evening at the Elkhart County Fair experienced such a homecoming first hand.

A postponed veterans program was held prior to the concert. Tim Yoder, master of ceremonies, had the honor of introducing six members of the Indiana National Guard from Indiana. Following a standing ovation from those in the packed grandstand and those braving the rain in track seats, the special announcement was made.

“From time to time our military has to serve and may be gone for a year, they may be gone for two years,” said Yoder. “Tonight, I am honored and (it’s) just a thrill to introduce a gentleman who flew in from Texas to surprise his mother, PFC Mason Corner.” Corner, who is home on leave, surprised his mother, who had no idea of his arrival.

Corner, who walked down the steps, and to the left of the stage met his mom who had second row track seating for the night’s show. Following a brief embrace they went to their track seats to enjoy the show.

The reunion was coordinated several weeks ago after Elkhart County Fair executive director Bryan Blair received a call from Ken Mounsey with Operation Support Our Troops. Planning began and arrangements made. Mounsey had been contacted by Porter’s brother Tony VanKirk to set plans in place.

The crowd showed its appreciation for his service by giving a standing ovation for him and for his mother.

It’s a night that is surely going to be remembered by those who attended the concert and his mother.
