Villalobos, Abbott Earn CL Honors
AVON, Ohio – Two Grace College women were among the latest round of the Players of the Week honors issued by the Crossroads League.
A record-breaking performance by Sydney Abbott earned her the NCCAA National Golfer of the Week award.
Abbott, a junior on Grace’s women’s golf team, had the best tournament of anyone in program history last weekend. She finished second out of 93 golfers at the highly competitive IWU Invitational.
She shot 80-70, setting the program record for best two-round score (150) by five strokes. Additionally, her second-round 70 beat the previous best by a Lady Lancer by three strokes.
The Lady Lancers are back in action on Sept. 10-11 at the Huntington Invitational.
Corinne Villalobos picked up her first national award after a four-goal performance.
Villalobos was named the NCCAA National Player of the Week as well as the Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Week for Grace’s women’s soccer team.
She netted a hat trick plus one, scoring all four goal in Grace’s 4-0 win over Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday. The junior has started every game in midfield for Grace, helping the Lady Lancers to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2015.
The Lady Lancers head to Arizona this week with matches at No. 14 Embry-Riddle and Arizona Christian.
Mount Vernon Nazarene had three athletes named, with Logan Thompson taking men’s soccer Offensive Player of the Week and cross country runners Justus Paul and Rachel Gerber.
Marian University had Brenna Malatestinic win the women’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week, as well as volleyballers Megan Hawley take Defender of the Week and Madi Heffron take Setter of the Week.
Indiana Wesleyan swept the tennis awards, with Eli Steiner taking men’s Player of the Week and Alex Mella earning women’s Player of the Week.
Spring Arbor volleyballer Sydney Ritz won Attacker of the Week, and Northridge High School graduate Philip Keller took Defensive Player of the Week honors for Bethel, allowing just one goal in over 180 minutes of action in goal for the Pilots.
