WINONA LAKE – Grace College had golf and tennis in action Tuesday.

Grace’s men’s golf team made a massive jump on the final day of the Bill Bockwitz Classic, hosted by Spring Arbor.

The Lancers shot their lowest round of the two-day tournament on Tuesday with a 292, beating out Monday’s best round by 17 strokes.

Grace’s 912 as a team placed fifth out of 11 teams at The Grande Golf Club.

After two rounds of golf on Monday, the Lancers sat in seventh place. Camden Gongwer had Grace’s best score on Monday by carding a 78-74.

Jacob Abrahamson had a second-round 74, Caleb Leak had a first-round 75, and Noah Wright shot a first-round 76.

All four players shot a sub-80 round on Tuesday to spark Grace’s comeback. Wright in particular excelled with a round of 70, the lowest round of the day by two strokes. He jumped up the individual leaderboard by 16 spots, finishing in 22nd place.

Gongwer’s 72 on Tuesday gave him a three-round total of 224, good for 12th place. Leak carded a 73 (229 total) for 24th place, and Abrahamson shot a 77 on Tuesday.

The Lancers are back in action over the weekend, playing the St. Francis Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Grace’s women’s tennis team was unable to upset Marian on Tuesday, losing 6-3 in a tightly contested match.

The Lady Lancers (9-3, 6-3 Crossroads League) wrap up the conference portion of the regular season and could be seeded as high as No. 3, depending on how the remaining matches conclude this week.

Emily Mast had the strongest showing of the day for Grace. She teamed up with Jenna Jackson to win 9-7 at No. 1 doubles, Grace’s only doubles’ win. She then quickly dispatched her opponent at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2.

Carrie Copeland and Molly Fitzpatrick barely lost 7-9 at No. 2 doubles, and Jayna Armstrong was close at No. 4 singles with a 4-6, 5-7 scoreline.

Morgan Mast was the lone other Lady Lancer to win in singles as she claimed a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6.

“The girls played well today and had chances at a few other spots,” said Grace head coach Marcus Moore. “We need to continue to improve and take advantage of deuce games for us to get where we want to go.”

The Lady Lancers are at home for the next two matches. Grace hosts Trine on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Manchester on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Max Rozas picked up the lone point for Grace’s men’s tennis in an 8-1 defeat at Marian on Tuesday.

The Lancers (6-5, 4-4 Crossroads League) were much closer than the final scoreline appeared, but the Knights (9-1, 7-1 CL) came away with the win at almost every position.

Grace fell into an early hole by losing all three doubles’ points. Conner Bates and Jacob Gray were edged out 8-6 at No. 3 doubles, and Max Rozas and Caleb Yoder lost 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Rozas earned his win at the top singles’ position with a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline. Pavle Popovic battled hard but came up short at No. 2 singles (5-7, 4-6).

The Lancers wrap up the regular season on Thursday with a crucial road match at Spring Arbor. Only one game separates the No. 4-7 seeds in the league standings as of Tuesday night.
