WARSAW WINS DUNES TOURNEY
It’s called the Dunes Tourney and it’s hosted by Warsaw. And played in LaPorte. A long way for host Warsaw to go to win its own tournament, but that’s what it did Saturday at the prestigious compilation.
Warsaw held court against Triton, Reeths-Puffer (Mich.), Wheeler and then Mishawaka Marian to win the championship at the Dunes Volleyball Complex. The tournament, part of the brainchild of Warsaw head coach Rick Ashmore and his roots in the region, saw several area teams compete.
Warsaw won the title 25-18, 20-25, 20-18 over Marian and defeated all three of its pool teams by 2-0 counts.
Tigers Kacy Bragg, Kylie Smith and Kennedy Lauck all were named to the All-Tournament Team while Betty Barnett was named Tournament MVP.
For the day, Barnett had 32 kills while Lauck added 20 kills, Lauck adding 10 blocks in the Marian game. Bragg had 75 assists, 23 helpers and 12 digs in the final, and Smith had 39 digs, 16 in the championship game.
Tippecanoe Valley finished seventh, Wawasee 13th and Triton 15th in the varsity grid.
Wawasee was 2-2 on the day, beating Concord and South Bend Clay while losing to Valley and Glenn. Elizabeth Kleopfer had 34 assists and 15 kills to lead the Lady Warriors while Madison Simmons had 33 digs, 12 kills and 10 aces.
Tippecanoe Valley was also 2-2, it’s full day not immediately reported. Valley’s Hannah Engstrand was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Triton was 1-3, losing to Warsaw, Concord and Buchanan (Mich.) before beating South Bend Clay to end its day. Stats for the Trojans were not provided.
Marian beat Warsaw to win the JV side of the tournament. Tippecanoe Valley was fourth, Wawasee fifth and Triton 14th among the teams. Stats for the JV games were not immediately provided other than Wawasee, which had Emma Dippon record 21 kills, 10 aces and five blocks. Delaney Hare had 31 digs and Kai Jamora added 34 assists and 20 digs.
LAKEVIEW 8TH GRADE FIRST AT LAKEVIEW TOURNEY
The host Lakeview Tigers won its own Lakeview Invitational Saturday, topping the eight-team field.
Lakeview beat Wabash in the final 25-24, 18-25, 15-12. En route, Lakeview also lost to Summit, then beat Summit, Southwood and Wawasee.
Caitlyn Patrick led the team with 30 kills and added 16 assists, six aces and four blocks. Lauren Eastwood added 11 kills, Kinsey Atkins had 24 digs, Tessa Graney had 30 assists and Mallory Mulligan had three blocks.
Individual results for Edgewood, Wawasee and Tippecanoe Valley were not immediately supplied. Edgewood finished third, Wawasee seventh and Valley eighth in the team standings.
