Warsaw Community Public Library: Celebrate The Holidays

Christmas has passed, as has the first day of the new year. So are the holidays over? Merriam-Webster defines “the holidays” as “the time from November until the beginning of January during which many holidays are celebrated.” So, yes, those holidays are over for a while. Warsaw Community Public Library does, however, celebrate other special days throughout the year, and some of those will be happening soon.
Children’s Services at the Warsaw Community Public Library has designated shelving to house and display holiday stories and informative books about special celebrations. If you look along the wall under the mural in the northeast corner of the room, you will see books highlighting both religious and secular commemorations, from volumes about the New Year to stories about Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. February brings days dedicated to the end of winter and to celebrating love and friendship. You can find picture books, easy readers and juvenile non-fiction books. Their chapter books featuring holiday tales are located on the south side of the room, and feature color-coded tape corresponding to the holiday featured.
Let’s look at some of the books they offer for the Valentine’s Day holiday coming up on Feb. 14. If you like stories with familiar characters, you could check out “Hello Kitty: Happy Valentine’s Day,” “The Berenstain Bears’ Valentine Love Bug” or “Winnie the Pooh and Valentines, Too.” Or try 2013’s magical story “Foxy in Love” by British author Emma Dodd. Ethan Long had a creepy Valentine’s Day book published in 2017. “Valensteins” is the modern tale of two monsters who find that they like each other, despite the objections of their ghostly friends.
Their juvenile non-fiction offerings include an easy reader explaining what the modern holiday entails. “Valentine’s Day” by Rebecca Pettiford has only been in their collection for a few months but has been checked out multiple times. Children read holiday books all year long. They know what they like. WCPL offers craft books such as “Handmade Valentine’s Day Crafts” and riddle books like “I Spy: I Love You” by Jean Marzollo. They have a few Valentine’s Day books in Spanish as well.
Come in and celebrate love and friendship at the Warsaw Community Public Library.
