Tigers Third, Carpenter Medalist At Jeff
The seventh-ranked Warsaw boys golf team captured third place in the Lafayette Jeff Classic Invitational Saturday.
The Tigers shot 318 in the 20-team field, which included four ranked teams. Warsaw had won a program record six tournament titles in a row this season before its third-place finish Saturday.
Triton’s Quentyn Carpenter continued his outstanding play of late in earning individual medalist honors with a round of 73. The junior shot 36-37 on the par 72 layout at the Batlle Ground Golf Club.
The field was missing one key participant in Warsaw senior standout Tyler Ostrom. The defending state champion and Ball State bound Ostrom did not play Saturday in order to rest for the state tournament, which begins with sectional play Friday at the Stonehenge Golf Club in Warsaw.
Carpenter, who led Triton to a sectional championship in 2011 by earning medalist honors at Stonehenge with a round of 70 (Ostrom shot a 73), capped off a great week. He shot 65 last Monday to earn medalist honors in the Bob Turner Classic hosted by Warsaw at the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club in Leesburg. Carpenter was also medalist with a round of 69 last Saturday as the Trojans won the Northern State Conference Championships played at Mystic Hills in Culver.
No. 13 Hamilton Southeastern won the Jeff tourney Saturday with a 306. No. 19 Indianapolis Cathedral was second at 318, followed by Warsaw (318), No. 5 Floyd Central (323), Lebanon (323), Lakeland (327), Fishers (335), Twin Lakes (339), Lafayette Central Catholic (343) and Brownsburg (345) in the top 10. Rounding out the field were Columbus North (347), Triton (347), Lafayette Jeff (353), Kokomo (354), Fremont (363), Warren Central (369), Rochester (384), Franklin Central (395), Ben Davis (403) and Frankfort (414).
Junior Jon Schram led the Tigers Saturday with a 75. Junior Tim Ahlersmeyer fired a 78, freshman Jonny Hollar 82, sophomore Jared Essig 83 and senior Bennett Hollar 88 for coach Ben Barkey’s team.
Carpenter paced coach Jack Carpenter’s Triton squad with his one-over medalist round. Ryan Rapp shot an 85 for the Trojans, Austin Kanarr 91, and Chandler Slone and Lucas Shafer each had a 98 for Triton.
Carpenter was medalist Saturday with Jon Williams of Cathedral runner-up with a 74. Rounding out the top five were Colin Brooks of Fishers, Graham McAree of Hamilton Southeastern and Tyler Davis of Hamilton Southeastern, each with a 75.
Warsaw and Triton both take part in the Warsaw Sectional Friday at the Stonehenge Golf Club in Warsaw. Both teams will be in the first group which begins play at 10 a.m.
The Warsaw junior varsity team won the LaVille Lancer Golf Invitational Saturday at Swan Lake Resort. The JV Tigers shot 314 to top a field which included varsity teams.
Plymouth was second among the 11 teams with a 321. Tippecanoe Valley placed third with a 321 and Triton was 11th with a 403.
Ryan Cultice and Evan Cultice each shot a 77 to lead the Tigers and tie for fourth place among individuals. Josh Ahlersmeyer shot a 79 for WCHS to tie for eighth place. Viraj Gokhale shot 81 and Will Petro 84 for the JV Tigers.
Tanner Neeley shot 78 and Teddy Shepherd 80 to lead Valley.
Zach Hochstedler of Fairfield was medalist with a round of 74.
