8-Year-Old Dies After Being Struck By Car In Front Of Harrison Elementary
WARSAW — An 8-year-old died Monday, June 10, after being struck by a car near the intersection of North Pointe Drive and Husky Trail in front of Harrison Elementary.
The injured child was transported from the scene by Lutheran EMS. While enroute to Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital, EMS diverted to Whitley Parkview in Columbia City where he was pronounced dead.
Identification of the victim was withheld pending notification of family.
The accident appeared to happen near the crosswalk in front of Harrison Elementary. The suspected vehicle, a black Nissan Sentra, stopped further to the north in the northbound lane. The vehicle was later towed after being examined by police.
The driver of the Sentra was identified as Raven L. Loubert, 24, from Tippecanoe. Authorities said she was cooperating with police in the investigation.
The accident occurred at 1:47 p.m., causing traffic to be blocked in multiple directions.
Afterward, Warsaw Community Schools’ staff and administration issued a statement offering their thoughts and prayers to those affected.
The intersection was upgraded to improve safety at the crosswalk after concerns were raised about a year ago.
Brad Kellar, information officer for the Warsaw Police Department, said Kosciusko County’s fatal alcohol investigation team was called in to investigate. He said that doing so does not mean the driver was intoxicated.
