WARSAW — Unexpected costs for stormwater pipe repairs and replacement under East Market Street will drive the cost of the overall project up by about $250,000.

The city Board of Public Works and Safety approved a handful of change orders, paperwork needed when pubic works projects are adjusted in the middle of the work.

The biggest change order had to do with “unforeseen” problems involving stormwater pipe along the south side of the road near Fribley Field.

The pipe needed to be relined, but some of it was beyond repair, so as an alternative, the pipe was diverted to the center of the street where a previously-used abandoned clay pipe is being resurrected for use.

James Emans, city engineer, said the clay pipe was abandoned at a time when work crews didn’t have the technical ability to make repairs.

The other four change orders resulted in a combined cost of about $4,683.

In other matters:

• The board approved a recommendation to award the West Center Street paving project to Phend & Brown, Milford, for $205,404. The project is expected to be completed late this summer. The other bid was from E&B Paving, Plymouth, for $238,000.
• The board approved a contract with Michiana Contracting, a Plymouth company that will make traffic signal improvements at Center and Buffalo streets. Cost of the contract was $358,864.
• The board approved the annual interlocal agreement with Warsaw Community Schools for a sharing of costs to pay for four resource officers. The school pays for three-fourths of the annual salary and benefits for two of the four.
• The board approved acceptance of a $2,500 grant from Norfolk Southern railroad. The money will be used for cameras mounted inside police vehicles.
