Warriors Cap Furious Rally
SYRACUSE – Not a bad time to show some fight. Wawasee went to the wire with Bremen in its volleyball season opener Saturday morning, rallying to win in five games.
Bremen won game one 25-21, only for Wawasee to come back and take the advantage with a 25-19, 25-14 pair. The visiting Lions would survive, 25-23, in game four to force a deciding fifth game. Tied at 14 apiece in the clincher, Wawasee would muster the final two points, capping a wild first win of the season and a program sweep of Bremen for the day.
Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips, in his first game of the second tour with the Lady Warriors, was in mid-season form not even ten points into the first set working the sidelines. After the win, Phillips offered, “A great first match to work out the rust.” Phillips last coached the team in 2014 before replacing Kayla Riportella this past offseason.
Several were involved with the win for the Lady Warriors. Molly Jones played well at the net, leading the team with eight kills and four blocks. Leslie Vazquez paced the defense with 17 digs and added six kills while Ella Williamson and Aundreya Wegener each had 11 digs. Kai Jamora and Liz Kleopfer combined for 23 assists and Dylan Konieczny and Emma Dippon both had five kills. Ashley Vazquez fired seven aces at the Lions.
