NORTHWOOD 5, PLYMOUTH 0
NorthWood tennis remained unblemished with a clean sweep of Northern Lakes Conference rival Plymouth Tuesday.
The Panthers’ sternest challenges came in doubles play, where Jack Wysong and Landon Holland held off Drew Harrell and Adam Hunter, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, and Bryce Harner and Treyton Martin withstood Hugh Smith and Easton Strain in another 4 and 2 decision at the No. 2 spot.
NorthWood’s singles lineup more or less cruised as Wes Troyer and Ben Vincent both won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively, and Chase Horner won, 6-1, 6-1.
The Panthers junior varsity won six matches to five.
NorthWood’s varsity moves to 3-0 in the NLC and remains perfect at 7-0 overall.
GRACE WOMEN 7, ST. FRANCIS 0
Grace’s women’s tennis team stretched its record start to 7-0 with a sweep of St. Francis on Tuesday.
The Lady Lancers (7-0, 6-0 Crossroads League) are off to their best start in team history. Grace’s seventh straight win is approaching the record for longest winning streak as well (nine straight, 2008 and 2009).
Emily Mast and Dayana Ortega beat their opponents at No. 1 doubles 6-1, and Carrie Copeland and Jayna Armstrong won 6-2 at No. 2. Morgan Mast and Gretchen Adams did not drop a game at No. 3 doubles. Emily Mast (No. 1 singles) and Ortega (No. 3) were flawless 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Morgan Mast won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Shelby Bankson was sharp 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Copeland won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-4), and Armstrong was victorious 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4.
The Lady Lancers will welcome Taylor on Thursday at 1 p.m.
GRACE MEN 7, ST. FRANCIS 0
Grace’s men’s tennis team picked up another Crossroads League win with a 7-0 sweep of St. Francis on Tuesday.
The Lancers (6-1, 5-0 CL) continued their perfect start in league play and are tied for first with No. 22 Indiana Wesleyan atop the standings.
Max Rozas and Fabricio Galvan won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Pavle Popovic and Milan Savic (No. 2 doubles) and Ramiro Candia and Jacob Gray (No. 3 doubles) each won 6-1. In singles play, the Lancers did not lose more than three games across any of the six courts. Popovic won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Rozas earned a 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, and Galvan also won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Candia (No. 5 singles) and Kye Barrett (No. 6) both won 6-1, 6-2 against their singles’ opponents, and Savic was nearly perfect (6-0, 6-1) at No. 4 singles.
The Lancers return for a three-game homestand. Grace welcomes Taylor on Thursday as well as Spring Arbor on Saturday.
