Update: Truck Driver Escapes Serious Injury In Fiery Crash; 800W Remains Closed
ETNA GREEN — New details have been released Thursday night, Oct. 3, involving a fiery rollover crash of a semi tractor-trailer carrying ethanol in western Kosciusko County.
According to information provided by Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, a northbound semi tractor-trailer, carrying about 7,700 gallons of ethanol alcohol, dropped off the shoulder of CR 800W, about a half-mile north of CR 400N.
The tractor/trailer overcorrected, causing the ethanol to slosh within the tank. The trailer disconnected from the tractor and both units rolled over several times, igniting a fire.
The fuel began to burn and spread to a nearby field.
The driver of the semi-tractor was able to exit the cab with only minor injuries.
The accident was reported at about 6:24 p.m.
Emergency responders were still on the scene shortly after 9 p.m. and the road was expected to remain closed. Motorists are urged to avoid the area, police said.
Other agencies responding to the crash included Lutheran EMS, Kosciusko County Emergency Management, the American Red Red Cross, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Kosciusko County Highway Department and fire departments from Atwood, Etna Green, Nappanee, Bourbon and Winona Lake.
