SYRACUSE – Wawasee got back to business in a big way Thursday, dictating the pace of a 49-27 wrestling win over visiting Goshen.

The night featured 10 pins in 13 duals, six by the hosts in some aggressive displays coach Frank Bumgarner enjoyed seeing from start to finish.

While Goshen did score four pins and a decision in the contest, Wawasee would allow just 25 physical mat points within the 13 matchups, four of the contests the Warriors didn’t allow any Goshen tallies.

Particularly impressive showings by Wawasee came from Logan Stuckman at 106, a 47-second pin of Camden Wiese, and later a pin at 2:17 by Dylan Tom in the 120 card, holding off Armon Hairopoulos after a lively first two minutes to rally from a near fall on the restart to score a takedown and lightning quick pin.

Tim Shortt at 145 and Cam Zimmerman at 152 both had lopsided wins that ended with pins, Shortt’s at 3:01 over Fabian Macias and Zimmerman’s at 1:21 against Reuben Lopez.

“These kids feed off the team environment really well so if we start getting on a roll, everyone feeds off the energy,” said Wawasee head coach Frank Bumgarner. “We want to make sure we don’t fall into the trap where everyone thinks they need a first period pin. It’s not expected. You’re expected to wrestle for six minutes. If you get one in the first period, great.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys and they made a massive jump this week and just our movement, our head positioning, positioning on our hips and our attacks, it was much, much better. It’s what we’re looking for.”

Logan Baugh and Fernando Hernandez also earned pins, Baugh at 4:17 against Karanbir Singh at 170 and Hernandez at 3:43 against 182-pounder Draden Burton.

Isiah Faurote earned a decision, Elloit Tinsley a major and Jace Alexander a forfeit despite an announced competitor during warmups and the match call.

Goshen got pins from Jose Rosales, Nick Olson, Rasheek Bonds and Caleb Kilmer as well as a decision from Alberto Sanchez, who rallied in the final 20 seconds to win 2-1 over Quintin Spitzmacher.

“Abso-freakin-lutely it’s a great day when you can get a win against them,” noted an emphatic Bumgarner. “Putting them away, that’s nice and all, but it’s how we did it. We’ve been working on fundamental techniques, fundamental positioning, and it really showed. I just had a talk with these guys, and I’ve never coached a team that’s this coachable. And make this big of a jump from last Thursday (at Culver Academy) to this Thursday, it’s absolutely incredible.”

Wawasee moves to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference. The Warriors work again next Thursday at Concord.
