Shelton, Central Silence Wawasee
ELKHART — Cassie Shelton didn’t miss a beat, holding Wawasee to a mere two singles in a 10-1 Elkhart Central softball win Thursday afternoon.
The Central ace held Wawasee to just three baserunners overall, allowing just singles to Kylie Norris and Allissa Flores and walking Taylor Spangle. Norris scored the lone run for Wawasee. Otherwise, the Lady Warriors could not generate any momentum off Shelton.
The Blazer bats were more than ample against pitching counterpart Norris, who gave up six runs – five earned – and walking five in just four innings of work. Norris had just one strikeout.
The game for Wawasee was the season opener after having games at Westview and home dates with Lakeland and West Noble all canceled in the past five days leading up to Thursday’s opener. Wawasee (0-1) will now have until April 8 to recover before heading to Benton and a date with Fairfield.
“It was good to see what we had to work with,” said Wawasee head coach Hans Griepentrog. “It definitely showed that we were not outside much before our first game. But it was a good game to get in before the break.”
The Wawasee JV had the opposite result against Central, cruising to an 11-1 win. Alexis Graber was five-for-five at the plate, scored a pair of runs and earned the win in the circle. Katie Avery, Cristina DeLaFuente and Becca Anderson all had three hits for Wawasee, which collected 19 as a team against the Blazers. Nicole Streby also had an inside-the-park home run to aid the Wawasee cause.
