Syracuse Man Dies In One-Vehicle Crash
SYRACUSE — David E. Kuhn, 52, North Lake Street, Syracuse, died from internal injuries at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, following a one-vehicle crash at South Huntington and East Chicago streets, Syracuse.
The accident was at 1:52 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19.
Kuhn, who was conscious at the scene was able to speak to police at the crash site. However, he died a short time after arriving at Parkview Hospital.
According to Syracuse Police, Kuhn told police he was northbound on Huntington Street, going to a service call and had blacked out prior to the crash. A witness behind Kuhn’s vehicle said when the vehicles came to the intersection, the light was red prior to the arrival of their vehicles. The witness moved into the turn lane to turn east on East Chicago Street and observed the Kuhn driven vehicle heading into the turn lane as well, ahead of him.
The witness looked up at the traffic light and saw it was still red and was concerned with the speed of the mini-van, knowing it would not be able to come to a stop before the light turned red. After the van struck the traffic light pole, the witness went to the vehicle and found the driver conscious and alert, telling the witness he blacked out and did not remember anything else.
Turkey Creek Fire and paramedics were called to the scene. Firefighters extricated Kuhn from the vehicle and he was taken by ambulance to Wawasee High School, where a landing zone had been set up for Samaritan Air Ambulance.
Damage to the van, registered to Ritter Electric Heating, Syracuse; a light pole for the traffic control signal and a post protecting a fire hydrant was estimated up to $50,000.
The crash is being investigated by the Kosciusko County FACT team, along with Syracuse Police Department.
