Warsaw High School Welcomes New Guard Instructor Scott Downs
WARSAW — Off to an exciting start, Warsaw’s Color Guard is being led by new color guard instructor Scott Downs.
Downs joined the performing arts program in November. He began teaching color guard in 2011 in Beech Grove. He brings a passion for teaching and looks forward to seeing the Warsaw guards’ growth as they perform.
Looking back, Downs realized in sixth grade how important music was in his life after having just begun in the band and getting to see the marching band for the first time. He realized it was something he wanted to do. He attributes his color guard director and high school band director for instilling the importance of being a good musician, as well as color guard members, and said they taught him ways to better himself and those around him.
Downs is excited for the 10-member color guard to compete in IHSCGA competition hosted at Warsaw High School on Saturday, Feb. 15, alongside 25 other color guard groups from all over Northern Indiana. This year’s program is Qui Pius Contrition featuring the ballad Hallelujah sung by Tori Kelly. The competition, which is open to the public, begins at noon. Admission is $7.
Color guard units perform in winter competitions, during marching band season and in summer parades. The group is open to all high school students, with auditions held in the fall. For more information contact Band Assistant Director Kyle Travis at (574)-371-5099.
