INDIANAPOLIS – Day one of the IHSAA Girls Swim State Finals saw Northridge make a push for the ‘other’ championship while Wawasee will send a swimmer to day two after the preliminaries at IUPUI Friday night.

Wawasee freshman Alexis Mishler qualified 16th in the 100 freestyle with her time of 52.97, slipping into the consolation round of the state finals. Mishler also swam the backstroke and placed 22nd with a time of 57.98.

Wawasee’s two relays did not qualify for a second day, its school-record holding medley relay pulling a DQ in its go. The 400 free relay would land 21st with its post of 3:38.52.

Warsaw’s only entry of the night, the medley relay, finished 30th with a time of 1:58.24.

Northridge, on the other hand, is set to score some big points in its quest for second on the team line.

Elsa Fretz is seeded first in the 50 free after being the only swimmer to crack 22 seconds, posting 22.91, as she looks to defend her state title. Fretz is also sitting third in the butterfly and has the Ridge 200 and 400 free relays both fourth heading into Saturday.

The Raiders also have Jenna Nethercutt sixth and Anna Yeater 16th in the breaststroke, Sydney Nethercutt eighth in the 200 free and 10th in the 500 free and it’s medley relay eighth. Northridge is also sending out three divers in the morning, including top seed Kaitlin Simons and three-seed Jiselle Miller. Evie Long will also dive for the Raiders.

Concord has Grace Brenneman eighth in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, Ella Lantz 11th in the backstroke, its 200 free relay 10th, the 400 free relay 13th and the medley relay 14th. Diver Brooke Farnham looks to break into the top 16.

Carmel seeks its 34th straight state championship, and has six top times going into Saturday among a smattering of top-eights positioned to continue the Greyhounds’ unbelievable run. Northridge, Fort Wayne Carroll, Fishers, Zionsville and Homestead should battle for the runner-up spot.

Diving begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium with swimming and diving championships beginning at 1 p.m.
