LEESBURG – In similar action as its neighbors to the north and south, Leesburg Summer Recreational League is looking forward to providing a summer ball league.
Justin Moneyheffer from the league noted all levels are being planned to see action this summer, those including T-Ball, coach pitch, softball and baseball. The league did not set a formal deadline in the wake of Indiana governor Eric Holcomb’s Back On Track phase program. Moneyheffer noted the lack of a deadline was in response of several other leagues deciding to not open. That would allow those without a league to come and play in Leesburg if desired.
Leesburg Summer Recreational League and Wawasee Community Summer League are investigating a possible partnership in working some interleague games this summer.
Moneyheffer also added that updates will be made to the league’s Facebook page, and registration information for the summer league can also be found on the Facebook and the league’s web site.
In a statement on May 6 from the league posted to its Facebook, league president Bill Trump states:
“LSRL is going to be playing ball!
“Our plan is for team practices to take place the end of May and first couple weeks of June (until the guidelines allow for larger gatherings). Practices will still be limited to one team during their reserved field time. No scrimmages.
“If things go as projected. We will only lose a couple weeks of what our “normal season” typically runs. We are leaning towards simply removing the year end tournaments, which is what our last two weeks are usually. This will allow for several weeks of games (about a couple games each week for teams). We’re hoping the season would run till middle of July like we commonly do, to allow for family vacations towards the end of summer.
“Bill has also stated that phone registrations have opened for a week or so to allow those kids whose previous leagues chose not to. The ballpark number is (574) 453-4545, leave your info and he will get back to you.
“There will be a more detailed post pertaining to opening day, picture day, chicken fundraiser, etc once everything is finalized. But as of now, (and we all know how things could change by the hour with public gatherings allowance) we are on for 2020.
“For those families that would prefer to have their sign up fee refunded. Please contact Bill through the league number listed above and he will also touch base with you when he’s available.
“Thanks everyone, this is wild times. Please let your friends know. Our overall goal is to just get the kids somewhere to play this summer, if for nothing else a chance to go back to “normalcy” for them on the field.”
