WARSAW – With temperatures on the rise this week, Mayor Joe Thallemer is urging people to stay away from city beaches.
He discussed the issue at a news conference last week and reiterated his concerns Monday, June 1, in a phone call.
Beaches are set to reopen on June 14 as part of Gov. Eric Holcomb’s five-step approach to re-opening the state following the COVID-19 global outbreak.
Thallemer said there is a chance the beaches could reopen sooner than expected but said that won’t happen this week.
“We’re just trying to do what’s best,” Thallemer said.
“When we get indications that the statistics are starting to drop measurably, I think we’re certainly open to opening the beaches earlier,” he said.
Temperatures are expected to reach into the upper 80s on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
On a related note, city hall reopened to the public on Monday, June 1, with extra precautions being taken, Thallemer said.
