FORT WAYNE – It wasn’t officially an IHSAA golf tournament, but it was officially their ‘Last Dance’.
And fittingly, one of the teams competing in the Indiana Golf Association 2020 Boys Team Championship advancing to the final round was appropriately titled “Last Dance”.
The high school golf tournament, put on by the IGA as a goodwill showing for the high school boys golfers that missed their spring season, started Monday as a regional qualifier at six locations across the state. The Fort Wayne pod, featuring teams from northeast Indiana, had a pair of teams from NorthWood, a team from Warsaw and a conglomerate of Tippecanoe Valley, Manchester and Triton players (dubbed as TRC) all part of the action.
The Last Dance, TRC and Columbia City’s groupings all moved on after their scores were tabulated at Brookwood Golf Club Monday afternoon. TRC, made up of Tippecanoe Valley’s Cade Brouyette and Greg Miller, Triton’s Cole McKinney and Manchester’s brotherly duo of Harley and Owen Kurschwitz, finished third and advanced with an even 300, four shots clear of Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian.
Harley Kruschwitz led the TRC team with a 72, with Owen one back at 73 and Brouyette posting a 75. McKinney and Miller each finished at 80.
The Last Dance, made up of Penn players, finished at 297 to claim team honors in the 13-team field. Baz Fury and Keenan Donze each shot 73 to lead the winners.
Columbia City’s 299 had Alex Hedrick post the only score in the 60s in the tourney, a 69, which landed him as medalist for the day. Andrew Hedrick and Tyler Barnhart each had 76s to boost the Eagles.
Warsaw’s team at Brookwood had Lewis Turley lead the Tigers with a 77 and Jack Yeager card a 79. Rounding out the 320 for the squad included an 81 from Tucker Carlile, 83 from Seth Hildebrand and 85 from Aidan Bowell.
NorthWood’s roster was split into two groups. Team 1 had Cooper Wiens lead the way with an 80, followed by Earl Williams at 84, Jon Cripe at 85, Keaton Kitson at 94 and Kyle Cripe at 96 to compose a 343. Team 2 hung a 405, made up of Brady Chupp’s 92, followed by Drew Callander at 99, Chase Feenstra at 103, Riley Linville at 111 and Ashton Hochstetler at 116.
The Last Dance, Columbia City and TRC will head to the final round, a two-day run Wednesday and Thursday to be played at Purdue’s Kampen Golf Course. There will be 18 teams from the six regionals in the hunt for the mock ‘state title’.
