This Year’s Veteran Stand Down Will Be August 21 At Ivy Tech
News Release
WARSAW – Goodwill and Vets’ Community Connections will host the 4th annual Kosciusko Military Veteran Stand Down from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 21, at Ivy Tech Community College.
Stand Down is a concept that was created during the Vietnam War. A Stand Down was time away from the battlefield when soldiers could rest from combat and take care of personal hygiene, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of battle buddies in a safe environment. Stand Down afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health, and overall sense of well-being.
The goal of the event is to help veterans and their families who are experiencing financial obstacles. For some, it is a time to receive a warm meal and clothing. For others, it is a life-changing event.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, changes were made so that we can bring this event to Kosciusko County while keeping veterans and military families safe.
Veterans will have access to most of the services as in past Stand Down events but from the comfort and safety of their vehicle.
We are encouraging veterans to register online ahead of the event. Upon arrival, volunteers will assist with checking veterans in, they will then drive through and stop at stations to pick up the various items that will be available. As in the past, we will be providing free items such as survival backpacks, hygiene kits, some clothing items, and a free meal To-Go.
Please contact Jill Powers, Veterans/VCC Program Manager, Goodwill Industries of Michiana at: [email protected] or (574) 440-5487 if you have questions or need assistance registering.
