Warsaw Community High School continues efforts in community service today with the school’s annual BLITZ (Bringing Light Into the Tiger Zone).

The annual event will begin today at 2 p.m. as students leave from the high school to six separate locations in Warsaw and Winona Lake. Students will be visiting Our Father’s Home, Grace Village, Miller’s Marry Manor, Warsaw Meadows, Mason Health and Rehab and Isaiah 11 Ministry. The service event will conclude at 4:30 p.m.

According to Meg Whittey, the teacher in charge of assisting the sophomore student council with the event, a total of 60 students will participate in this year’s BLITZ. Whittey states WCHS students were extremely eager to help around the community. Though the school offered 60 open spots to students on their signup sheet for the event, Whittey believes that, due to how quickly the positions were filled, the event could possibly feature more students in the future.

Service activities will include assisting with organizing, stocking, cleaning, yard work, weeding, gardening and visiting with residents located in the nursing homes. According to Whittey, the event helps create excitement toward community service with students.

“This is a good jumping off point for students to start volunteering,” explained Whittey when asked what students garner from the event. “BLITZ is a great catalyst to start volunteering.”

Outside of student volunteers, many teachers also volunteered their time and efforts in assisting with chaperoning and giving back to the community. Teacher volunteers include Traci Hamilton, Christopher Hindsley, Angie Heinsman, Barb McCollom, Jennifer Bradley, Steve Waldeck, Scott Schramm, Kaleigh Felisberto, Brenda Irvine and Angela Hopper.
