Lakeland Christian Academy Boys 2, Culver Community 2     

In a match contested in Winona Lake, No. 14 (1A) Lakeland Christian Academy and Culver Community played to a 2-2 draw. The Cavs drew first blood at the halfway point of the first half. It looked as though they would take that lead to the break but for a penalty kick in the final minute before halftime that was converted by LCA’s Landen Brenner.

Two minutes into the second stanza, LCA’s Andrew Bosch found the goal, off an assist from  Hunter Rice. The visitors found the equalizer in the 63rd minute, which turned out to be the final score of the game. On the evening, LCA was outshot by their guests 13-9.

“We finished the first half well, and started the second half with great energy,” said LCA skipper Dan Miller. “Landen Bremer calmly finished the penalty kick and freshman Andrew Bosch had an incredibly well taken goal. Our individual defending broke down too many times, and our midfield was too slow to defend. I’m happy that we have a week off before we play Manchester, it will allow us to refocus as we prepare for the rest of the season.”

The tie left the Cougars with a 5-3-3 mark on the season.

NorthWood Boys 1, Warsaw 1

On Senior Night at Wellfield Park in Nappanee, it looked as though the Panthers and Tigers were headed for a nil-nil draw. After 72 minutes of play, neither team was able to find the back of their opponent’s net.

It wasn’t until the 73rd minute that Warsaw’s Javier Enciso beat Panther goalie Andrew Graber with what many assumed would be the only score of the game.

However, in the game’s waning minutes, the Panthers were awarded a free kick following a Tiger penalty. The chance was converted by senior star Andre DeFreitas to equalize the game, which is where it would finish only a few moments later.

The match left the Tigers with a 3-5-3 overall record, 0-2-1 in the NLC, while the Panthers moved to 5-2-2, 1-1-2 in conference play.

Wabash Girls 3, Lakeland Christian Academy 2

It was a tough game. Wabash came out the aggressor and was able to capitalize on a low shot that barely got past LCA’s keeper.  The Cougars would answer with a goal from Finley Hobbs after a through ball bounced around from a few defenders. Hobbs’s shot high over the Wabash keeper’s hands to even the score.

Wabash was awarded a penalty kick but failed to convert, missing the net to the left.  Late in the first half, LCA played their goal kick which was stolen, which Wabash would finish with the ball finding the back of the Cougar goal.

In the second half, LCA came out and was able to tie the game on a goal from Keely Bauer who was able to slide it past the keeper. The game went back and forth. as LCA would have multiple quality chances but failed to convert.  A hand ball was called with 30 seconds left in the game on the top of the 18, which Wabash was able to score off the free kick.  

” This was a very tough way to lose tonight, ” said LCA coach Nat Raber. “We had at least five ‘one on ones’ with the keeper and didn’t convert on those.  If we take care of those, then calls at the end of the game wouldn’t matter.” 

LCA is now 3-5-1 on the year and play Lakewood Park Christian at home at 5 p.m. Thursday.  Senior night recognition will follow the match.

NorthWood Girls 5, Mishawaka 0

The Lady Panthers earned their first NLC win of the season, following three 1-0 conference losses to Warsaw, Northridge and Concord to begin their 2020 round robin.slate. They travelled to new NLC foe Mishawaka and came home with a 5-0 decision in their portfolio.

Caitlin Knepp scored both NorthWood’s first half goals, which took them to a 2-0 lead at intermission. The goals came one minute apart in the 32nd and 33rd minutes of the game. The second goal was assisted by classmate Ari Topping off a laser throw in from the left sideline even with the top of the 18.

In the second half, NorthWood’s passing game came together, creating constant pressure on the Mishawaka defense and goalkeeper. A foul against Knepp just outside the top left corner of the 18 gave Emma Martz the opportunity for a free kick, which she converted on a ball that scooted past the keeper’s left hand without touching anyone on its way to the back of the net.

Junior defender Lizzie Hilderbrandt added the final two Panther tallies, the first of which came off a free kick from 25 yards out.

The win raised NorthWood’s record to 3-4-1. Next up is a home date with NLC rival Goshen on Thursday evening.
