Goshen Man Arrested For Attempted Murder After Rochester Shooting
Staff Report
ROCHESTER — A Goshen man was recently arrested after allegedly shooting a man in Rochester during the holiday weekend.
Tyler Allen Smith, 25, 19899 CR 26, Goshen, is charged with attempted murder, a level 1 felony; aggravated battery, a level 3 felony; and criminal recklessness, a level 6 felony.
Court records also show a previous address for Smith in Rochester.
On Nov. 27, Rochester Police officers received a report of a shooting on Race Street. Dispatch told officers that there was a gunshot victim in front of a residence.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a man who had two gunshot wounds in his right arm, as well as a gunshot wound in his right hip.
According to court documents, while medics were treating the man, he provided officers with a statement on what happened. The man said he was at the Hot Spot on Main Street in Rochester when he began riding a bicycle back to a residence on Race Street. While he was going back to the residence, a vehicle followed the man; Smith was a passenger in the vehicle.
When the man got off his bicycle, Smith allegedly began shooting at him. The man said he believed at least four shots were fired. He said he could tell Smith was a passenger in the vehicle by his silhouette and the vehicle he was in.
The man said he didn’t see Smith pull the gun’s trigger but that he was sure it was Smith who shot him. Court documents state that nothing was said between the man and Smith prior to or during the shooting.
A woman at the Race Street residence told officers that Smith had shot the man with a pellet gun approximately a week before the shooting. She also confirmed she heard four gunshots when the shooting occurred.
After medics had taken the man from the scene, officers investigated the residence where the shooting took place. While investigating, officers discovered bullet holes on the residence’s vinyl siding. In total, there were three holes in the residence’s siding where it appeared bullets had struck the residence.
The man was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where a bullet lodged in his hip was removed.
Smith was booked in the Fulton County Jail on Nov. 28 with no bond.
