SYRACUSE — Less than a year after becoming assistant superintendent, Dr. Steve Troyer has become the leading candidate to replace Dr. Tom Edington as superintendent of the Wawasee Community School Corporation. Edington will retire at the end of this year.
Edington announced his plans to retire Nov. 24.
Late Tuesday evening, Dec. 1, the school corporation released the following statement:
“Wawasee Board of School Trustees met in a closed meeting Tuesday, Dec. 1, to discuss Superintendent Dr. Thomas Edington’s announcement of his intention to transition to retirement. The school board will officially accept Dr. Edington’s retirement at the regular monthly board meeting Tuesday, Dec. 8.
‘We wish him nothing but the best as he moves toward retirement,’ School Board President Rebecca Linnemeier stated.‘Tom has given Wawasee many great years and for that we are very thankful.’
The remainder of the meeting was dedicated to moving forward with the next steps in selecting a replacement.
“The board has decided Dr. Steve Troyer, current assistant superintendent is the best candidate for superintendent at Wawasee and will make strides in advancing Wawasee to the next level. This is a continuation of the ultimate vision they had for Dr. Troyer when he began his journey with the WCSC district leadership team,” the statement said.
‘This is not a decision we take lightly and look forward to seeing what Dr. Troyer will bring to the table as we proceed over the next few weeks,’ Don Bokhart, board member, stated.
“The board will follow the procedures put into place by Indiana Code for hiring a new superintendent (20-26-5-4.3) to replace Dr. Edington. ‘The next month is a time of transparency and clarity for our school corporation,’ stated Linnemeier.
“Several meetings are scheduled throughout the month of December. The next regular meeting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the Warrior Room at Wawasee High School followed by a public hearing Dec. 15 and a special board meeting Dec. 22. As Wawasee schools spend the remainder of the month celebrating Dr. Edington’s time at Wawasee, they will also be looking to the future with Dr. Troyer.
“Troyer is currently serving as the assistant superintendent at Wawasee Community School Corporation. Prior to his move to the central office, he was the principal at Milford School for two years. Before coming to Wawasee, Dr. Troyer served seven years as a high school assistant principal and taught Project Lead the Way for seven years before that. Dr. Troyer received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Indiana State University in May 2018.
“He and his wife, Brittany, have two young daughters, Kaitlyn and Harlee.”
